Ingredients

This berry breakfast bake is really easy to make, all you need are a few basic ingredients. It makes a great meal-prep for the whole week.

For the full ingredient measurements, scroll down to view the recipe card at the bottom of the page.

The ingredients in bowls.
  • Mixed berries, use your favorit mix! Fresh or frozen. I buy a mixed bag of frozen berries that has blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and currants.
  • Cinnamon, a little warming cinnamon takes the crumble topping to the next level.
  • Rolled oats, use certified gluten free oats if needed.
  • Almond flour, or almond meal.
  • Pecans, or chopped nuts of choice for a little added crunch and protein.
  • Coconut oil, or butter can also be used.
  • Brown sugar, adds a great flavor and sweetness to both the filling and crumble topping. Coconut sugar can also be used for a refined sugar free crumble.

See recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Nuts – this healthy berry breakfast bake uses some crunchy pecans, but any nut of your choice works.
  • Gluten-free – Oats are naturally gluten-free, but can contain traces of gluten. To ensure this apple pie crumble is gluten-free, only use certified gluten-free oats.
  • Protein – For an extra boost of protein, add 2 tablespoons of your favourite protein powder into the streusel topping. You might have to add a little extra melted coconut oil, if the topping is too dry.
  • Nut free – To make this an allergy friendly breakfast blueberry crumble, replace the pecans with some seeds like sunflower seeds or a mix of seeds. Replace the almond flour with ¼ cup all purpose flour.
  • Oil – Instead of the coconut oil, butter also works. Use 4 tablespoons of melted butter.
  • Sweetener – Coconut sugar is a great alternative to the brown sugar. Normal caster sugar also works. Add more if you like a sweeter breakfast.

Storage

If you have any leftovers of this Healthy oatmeal crumble, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days, without the yoghurt topping. Reheat a portion of the leftover crumble in the microwave until warm, and top with some yoghurt before serving.

The berry breakfast crumble also freezes well. Let the crumble cool completely before storing, then pack in a freezer friendly container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.

FAQ

Why isn’t the crumble topping crunchy?

This is a healthy breakfast crumble, so it contains less fat than a normal dessert crumble. But if you reduced the amount of coconut oil given in the recipe, the topping wont become as crunchy. So make sure to measure correctly. Also make sure to bake until the topping is golden brown, and let it cool for at least 10 minutes after baking, as the topping continues to crisp as it cools.

Can frozen berries be used to make this breakfast crumble?

Yes, frozen berries are a great alternative to fresh berries. They could also be more budget friendly and available year-round. There’s no need to thaw them first, add them frozen and follow the recipe as directed.

Is this berry breakfast crumble healthy?

Yes, it is made with wholesome ingredients like oats, mixed berries, and a modest amount of sugar and oil, making it a lower calorie alternative to a traditional dessert crumbles.
