This Apple Pie Smoothie is really easy to make and it is packed with fall flavours! Full of healthy ingredients including oats to keep you full longer. Served with some easy vegan caramel sauce, truly tastes like apple pie in a glass.

Fall is here but it’s still really warm in my parts of Spain, so I am happy sipping on this fall themed Apple Pie Smoothie. For other great smoothie recipes check out my Clementine Chocolate Vegan Smoothie or this Watermelon Smoothie

Ingredients, tips and substitutions to make this Apple Pie Smoothie:

  • Apples, I like to use Gala, but any sweet and crisp varieties will work here. Core the apples and chop them up to help create a smooth consistency.
  • Dates, Medjool dates or regular dates can be used. If you use Medjool dates, one is probably enough since they are a lot larger. In this recipe I used regular dates, they are smaller and not as soft but also WAY cheeper and work well with the sweet apple and cinnamon in this smoothie.
  • Almond milk, my favorite plant based milk to bake and cook with! You can use any other plant based milk here, or regular milk for non vegan.
  • Plain yoghurt, I used coconut yogurt in this recipe. Vanilla yogurt also work really well. For non vegan, greek yogurt can be used.
  • Oats, regular or quick cooking can be used.
  • Chia seeds, just a little adds nutrients and also for the texture in this smoothie
  • Cinnamon and cardamon, for that warming spice that goes so well with apple. You can use all cinnamon instead of the cardamon if decided
  • If you want your smoothie really cold, you can add a little crushed ice at the end of making this recipe.

Vegan Caramel Sauce (Optional)

  • Vegan butter (unsalted), for non vegan use regular butter. You can also use salted butter, but then omit the salt in this recipe
  • Maple syrup, use the real thing here! For non vegan honey can be substituted
  • Natural peanut or almond butter, natural works best! Just make sure to give it a good stir before adding it. I have a great recipe for this homemade Pecan Almond Butter that tasted amazing in the caramel sauce
  • Pinch of salt, use a good quality sea salt

Storing smoothies:

Smoothies are generally best directly when they are made. But you can also keep any leftovers or make a double batch for the next day.

My top tips for keeping a smoothie fresh for longer is to store it in a glass container with an airtight lid. Also important is to fill the container to the very top! This will prevent air to enter and with that unwanted oxidation that will affect the nutrients and also the color of your smoothies. Since this smoothie contains fresh apples, it will go a little brown when stored. Another option is to add a squeeze of lemon juice to your smoothie, this will help keep it fresh and tasty for the next day.

Generally, smoothies keep for 1-2 days in the fridge if stored correctly. Always smell it to make sure it is still fresh before drinking.

Top tip

The caramel sauce is optional but it adds a lot of great flavour to this apple pie smoothie! You can also use the caramel sauce in other recipes as well or as a topping to pancake, yoghurt or on ice cream!

FAQ

Why are apples good in smoothies?

Adding apples in smoothies are a great idea, they have fiber, antioxidants and Vitamin C and are full of natural sweetness.

Can I leave a smoothie in the fridge overnight?

Yes you can, store the apple pie smoothie in a glass container with an airtight lid. It is important to fill the container to the very top! This will prevent air to enter and with that unwanted oxidation that will affect the nutrients and also the color of your smoothies. Since this smoothie contains fresh apples, it will go a little brown when stored. To prevent this, add a squeeze of lemon juice to your smoothie, this will help keep it fresh and tasty for the next day.

Can you blend a raw apple?

Yes, chop up the apples first and remove the core. Chopping them first makes it easier to blend.

Do you leave skin on apples for smoothies?

It is not necessary to peal the apples before blending them. Leaving the skins on adds extra nutrients. Make sure to wash the apples well, I like to use organic apples.

How long does a homemade smoothie last?

Generally, smoothies keep for 1-2 days in the fridge if stored correctly. Always smell it to make sure it is still fresh before drinking.
